Design Story

01WHY

When my daughter was 3, she loved arranging things in rows. Bottles, blocks, anything she could line up. So I bought her dominoes. But they kept toppling before her tiny hands could finish. How do I help her stand them up? That question became EZ Domino.

02TRY
EZ Domino early prototype showing the evolution from heavy base to trapezoidal form

My first prototype was simple. Make the bottom heavier so it won't fall. It worked, but it looked like two pieces glued together. Then I thought of pyramids. Wide at the bottom, narrow at the top. The strength is just in the shape. So I redrew it as one smooth trapezoid. The piece felt right immediately. Like it had always been that way.

03SHAPE
Cross-section view of EZ Domino showing internal lattice structure for weight distribution

The shape was right, but the inside mattered too. I made the bottom dense and the top hollow. The heavy part stays low, so the center of gravity stays low. That's why it stands so easily.

04STAND
EZ Domino pieces stacked vertically into a rhythmic tower

EZ Domino does what every domino does. Stand, push, fall, but easy. Turn the same piece on its side, and the trapezoid becomes a stacking block. Same piece, just rotated. Two games in one toy.

05FLOW
EZ Domino pieces arranged in a perfect circle showing color harmony

I designed EZ Domino to stand and fall. That was the plan. But one day my daughter started arranging them in a circle. She figured it out herself. The trapezoid just curved naturally in her hands. A few pieces became a fan, more became a wheel. She found something I hadn't designed. Maybe the best part of any toy is what kids discover on their own.

06SHARE
A hand demonstrating the intuitive grip and placement of an EZ Domino piece

I made EZ Domino for my daughter. But the more I watched her play, the more I realized it could be for everyone. It's more than a game. It's for kids learning STEM. For therapists helping fine motor skills. For museums running workshops. For families gathering around the table, no one left out. One simple shape, but every hand can use it. Every age, every ability.
